Special Effects Hair Dye -Nuclear Red #13 Review

Special Effects Hair Dye -Nuclear Red #13
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
1. It is an orange based color, not pink. Most reds on the market (in the semi-perm category) are pink based - this includes pretty much every Manic Panic shade. If you want it to fade into a more pink color, stay away from this, as it's going to fade orange (unless you had pink on beneath it).
2. If you don't bleach your hair before using this, you're probably going to be disappointed. If you're looking for a deep red to add a shimmer of red in the sunlight, you're probably better off with Manic Panic's Vampire Red. If you DO bleach your hair before using this, this is one of the most forgiving dyes out there. You only need to bleach to a light orange, if bleaching freaks you out.
3. While bleaching does, in fact, damage the hair, vegetable based dyes (Manic Panic, Special Effects, many others) actually help the hair. You can leave it on for hours and hours and it will not harm your hair. The dye contains no harmful chemicals, and when used on hair that has been bleached or is dry, can be very beneficial. I find that as it fades, a month or so after dyeing, my hair starts to feel dry and brittle. As soon as I put some more of this dye on my hair and let it sit for a few hours, my hair is silky, smooth and fantastic. Some people put the dye on and keep it on overnight. Some people apply heat while it's on, to open the hair shaft so the dye can be absorbed more thoroughly. However you decide to do it, just know that these dyes are NOT damaging, and you can leave them on as long as you want. Also, make sure you do NOT condition your hair before using this, as the conditioner will make the application uneven. Wash your hair with a PH balanced shampoo (a lot of people use dandruff shampoo) and then let it dry. No conditioner. Some dyes have instructions telling you that you can go ahead and apply the dye after your hair is towel dried. Don't do this. Your hair should be bone dry, otherwise application can be uneven. After you rinse it out, only use conditioner on your hair. Your hair should already be clean.
4. This is a BRIGHT color. Expect that :)
5. I find Special Effects dye to be a lot less runny than others, say Manic Panic. This makes a huge difference when trying to keep it from getting on your counters, shoulders, clothing, skin... I definitely recommend keeping a towel just for dyeing your hair - drape that over whatever counter space you're using.
6. If you're considering trying a "safer" boxed dye to get a stunning red, you should avoid that at all costs. You will not achieve the bright red you want, and you'll damage your hair trying to get there. Better to bleach your own hair and then use this.
7. This bleeds a lot when you take a shower. Don't be alarmed. When you shampoo your hair, your suds will be bright red. This will fade a little every time you take a shower - and can fade even more if your hair is hardly damaged or is very damaged. When you bleach your hair, it makes the hair porous - or, it puts holes in your hair shaft. When you dye with a vegetable dye, like this one, the dye soaks into those holes. So, if you put this on virgin hair, this dye has little to no holes to soak into, and will probably rinse out pretty quickly. If you've bleached the heck out of your hair (like I have), it will probably rinse out more quickly, as your hair is TOO porous and allows the dye to seep out when you wash. A lot of people who keep their hair colored with dyes like this wash their hair only a few times a week. Some of them once a week. I feel that life is too short to have dirty hair. Some people also use cold water to wash and rinse their hair, as cold water closes the hair shaft (heat opens it) and keeps the dye from leaking out as much. Again, I feel that life is too short to take cold showers. Ways to combat this: Don't wash your hair with VERY hot water. Make it as cool as you can without being uncomfortable. Also, you can mix the hair dye with your conditioner, which will deposit color in your hair after you wash. Some people only mix a few tablespoons of their dye into their conditioner - I mix almost a half bottle in. My hair stays vibrant for a long time.
8. You'll read that you should rinse the dye out until the water runs clear. This absolutely will not happen. Ever. You could rinse it for 45 minutes, and there would still be dye running out of it. That's how it works. It's not like a boxed dye. Try to rinse it until the color in the tub water is very light, but not clear. I'm sure that I have come out of the shower before with quite a bit of dye still in my hair - but, don't worry about that. Some people rinse their hair with vinegar after they rinse out the dye, to seal the color in. I don't do this...well, I go back to life being too short. Life is too short to pour vinegar on my head. I'd rather retouch my dye more often than do that.
9. That leads me to talking about how the dye WILL run if it gets wet. This includes rain, pools, anything involving water. The running will be worse just after you dye. If you jump into a pool, not only will your hair leak out all over the place, but the chemicals in the pool will probably strip it further. Overall, not a good idea.
I have been dyeing my hair in crazy colors for well over a decade. I've been every shade of every color on the market. If you're looking for bright, extremely vibrant red hair, this is a great dye to use. Probably the best on the market.

Fudge Paintbox Hair Dye Review

Fudge Paintbox Hair Dye
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I use fudge hair color because its so easy to use and doesn't make my hair smell like chemicals. I just paint it on, let it sit, then wash it out and like magic i have lovely hair. My hair doesn't hold color very well, especially reds, but this stuff seems to hold on a bit longer than the stuff at the salons. I just apply it every 4 weeks to keep the color fresh and I don't have to worry about my hair getting damaged. One disclaimer: don't let it get on any surface besides your hair cause it stains like crazy.

Special Effects ~ Semi-Permanent Hair Dye ~ Blood Red Review

Special Effects ~ Semi-Permanent Hair Dye ~ Blood Red
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I used Blood Red on chin length hair shorter in back and barely used a 1/4 bottle. I took all precautions and suggestion on various websites if you google beeunique you can find UK website that has all kinds of tips.
Preparation:
Always do a strand test! Less surprises and you can adjust the color if you don't like it. I did mine 3 days before so I could see how washing effected it. They suggest snipping a strand I chose a small portion of the underside of my hair.
It looked good but in the end it was still a little much after I did my whole head.
My hair was a mix of natural light brown regrowth and strawberry blond from previous permanent hair dye.
Prepare the Blood(y) Red scene!
It was amusing my soon to be partner in crime came home to find the whole bathroom covered in plastic made a few jokes referrencing a few horror movies...
I covered my floor and and vanity with cheap dollar store shower curtains. I also used a few dry cleaning bags and painters tape to cover the walls near the sink. Mind you even with regular hair dye I always manage to spatter something. This dye is even harder to get off stuff. Prior to covering the sink I smeared a light layer of petroleum jelly on the porcelain as I'd read stories of people scrubbing thier sinks and vanities for 3 months and still having stains. For the sink I snipped a small hole for the spigot and a tiny hole for the water to drain directly to the drain. I left the sink handles covered to avoid possibly have to wipe them if I turned on the water.
Prepare to Dye!
I made sure I had a rat tail style comb for parting and a wider tooth comb for distributing the dye and backup combs. I had a dye applicator brush purchased from Sallys,I used a disposable plastic bowl for my dye. I picked out old clothes that I didn't care if they were stained by the dye. Tip: Have long sleeves to avoid potential dye splotches on the arms.
I bought those thick dishwashing style gloves to avoid getting on my hands. I had my shower cap ready also bought at the dollar store (Deals)in a pack of 8. I also had a hairdryer nearby. I used a jar of Palmers (thick) cocoa butter to apply around my skin to prevent the dye from getting on my face, ears and neck which is more skin friendly than vaseline especially if you are prone to acne. I found that Soft Soap Aloe did a fine job of washing the dye off if I washed immediately. Tip: Try exfoliating if you get it on you and trouble getting it off your face or hands. Wash off with Soft Soap Aloe.
All item were lined up on the counter and ready to go. Other items I'd suggest or you really need: are distilled water for hair prep and white vinegar 1/2 cup and 1 Quart REGULAR water(not the distilled they are chemical different) for your rinse, some sort pitcher to mix your vinager rinse in so you can dump it on your head. Paper towels, old towel, Hair dryer Hand mirror. You might want to Vaseline or find some way to protect your glasses if you wear them. I found plastic wrap as suggested a pain. Glove fingers are another suggestion but I suspect they will be a pain too.
I washed my hair with a volumizing shampoo which I read raises the hair follices which is ideal since you want this dye to get in it if possible. I washed twice to remove build up of hair products. You should at least use a shampoo that doesn't promise to condition your hair. Avoid conditioner it seals your hair which is not good for this application! I rinsed with regular water to get shampoo out and I did my final rinse with DISTILLED water I've read online it swells up the hair follices 20 time to their normal size. This is ideal for this type of dye if your hair cuticles are open they will absorb more dye. You may notice your hair is a little tangly. This because the cuticle are not laying flat so they may catch a bit. It will go fine when you put in the dye the comb ran through easily. If you have already have naturally very porous hair(born with it) you may want to skip the distilled water. I used half gallon to rinsed my hair use however much you want.I blow dried my hair
Tip: Make sure you let the bathroom cool down after blow drying washed hair I was pretty darn hot and I had to keep going.
I brushed on the dye onthe front myself trying to miss my scalp the best I could. I was successful around the front and on the top part around my ears it was harder I didn't want red ears.
May Sure Someone's Got Your Back!
For the back I got help and I would not suggest going the back alone it's too easy to get dye on your scalp and miss spots if you have short hair in back like me. You could find people will be lookng at bright red scalp for days if you get it all over. My helper also checked my whole head and still found places I had missed. Mostly near my ears.
Timing
I allowed it to process for 45 minutes I checked my head at that time rinse a little out of the front (you can reapply) and I could see it was really BRIGHT! My goal was NOT for the punky red hair most of you reading this will be aiming for. I'm older and work in a office I wanted vegetable dye that is not tested on animals this fit the bill. It's Vegan for anyone that cares. If you want really bright red it's perfectly ok to leave it in for hours even overnight and it will last longer. It won't harm your hair like permanentdyes. I wanted a subtle burgandy and after asking around based on my current tone of hair this was suggested.
Washing the Bloody Stuff Out!
Keep your gloves on! Bring an old towel and a hand mirror with you. You may want to rubber band the ends of the gloves and strip off your shirt. I highly advise washing your hair in a stationary tub if you have one. Use it every time you wash it hereafter. If it's a sink you care about coat it thinly with petroluem jelly and get help with washing the dye out to avoid splatters. DO NOT wash in the shower unless you like a blood red shower that you will be scrubbing for ages. I've read many reviews and stories stating this can happen.
Vinegar Rinse
So I went and quickly made my pitcher of 1/2 cup vinagar and 1 cup water for my rinse. That is the prescribed amount I decided to go with quart of water to have more rinse water. It worked. My hair had a odd smell similar to that of photo fixer like in photography darkroom after I put in the vinager rinse. So that it would fix the color in my hair made a little sense (they say it raises the PH which is supposed to be good with semi-perm dyes) but it did make me pause as to wonder what have they put in this dye? (supposed to be natural) I left the rinse in for 5 minutes and then rinsed and rinsed my hair until the water was fairly clear. I used very cool water which is supposed to help preserve the color. I used a sprayer hose nozzle which was great for helped to remove dye from my scalp. Pay lots of attention to rinsing and washing your scalp, neck and ears so you don't have any runs. I've seen people with brightly dyed ears, necks and forheads not cool! If you don't have help use your mirror to help you find any dye spots on your scalp neck or ears. I washed my hair with a color preserving shampoo. I got the water to run fairly clear even with shampooing rinsing with cool water.
My results:
It's pretty color the light brown parts of my hair which are underneath didn't take the dye well at all but they blend in since the ends are lightened. In case you think you will do better if your natural color is a shade brown by leaving it in overnight. I did my strand test overnight and I didn't get much better results.
My hair is a bright red especially when the light hits it indoors and out
I like the color except when the light reflects off off it in which case you REALLY see red. I think most of you who want that effect will be very satisfied. If I didn't work in an office I wouldn't care. Outside my office people say they like it and while some people can't wear colors like this I can pull it off. So if want something that looks a little unnaturally red and cool (bearing in mind not all people want excessively red hair) this is a good color without have to bleach your hair excessively if you have a fading red permanent hair color it will take and not look bad. For me I am in the process of finding out what other base color I have to mix with this to get the more burgandy tone I was seeking so I can be more office freindly. If you know post your comments.
For Follow up care:
If you like your color they suggest washing your hair less often to prevent fading maybe rinsing instead. The suggest adding a small amount of color to your conditioner and leave in for 10 minutes to help preserve it. Using color preserving shampoo. I am going to wash as normal which is every 2-3 days. I tried using a brown based conditioner to help tone down my hair to no avail.
One Last Warning:
The color did run even though I was very thorough in rinsing and washing my hair. I know I spent a minimum of 20 minutes doing this. I found pinkish-red on my forhead and edge of my face and obviously it was on my neck because it turned the collar of a jacket I wore a reddish color. I hope I can get it out the jacket was recently purchased. So stick with dark colored tops the first few days after dyeing. I didn't have much trouble removing the dye runs with some lotion and soft soap. I just washed my hair I used a couple of styling products that I think will help seal my hair. I will update to let you know if it runs still.

Manic Panic's Virgin Snow needs to be sold in larger jars because it is so awesome! I was waiting for this kind of product forever. Like all toners, however, care must be made to ensure color is long-lasting. This means that this product is not permanent and will fade. I bleached my hair to a pale yellow and used this product as a toner. My hair is finally white- I love it!

Special Effects SFX Hair Color Hair Dye Toner Mixer Review

Special Effects SFX Hair Color Hair Dye Toner Mixer
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I have been dying my hair for almost 25 years. It's been many colors, but is currently lavender/white (Special Effects mixer/toner) on top, with Special Effects Wildflower underneath. I prefer this brand and color to any other brand of semi-permanent colors I've tried, for its' excellent hue and length of time it keeps my hair toned. This product will work properly on very light bleached hair, (pale lemon yellow) to make it either white, or progressive shades of lavender depending on how long you keep it in. I keep my mixer/toner color on anywhere from 2-5 hours, (with a cap on) to get an awesome shade of lavender that will eventually fade into a silver white over several weeks. (but please make sure to note the manufacturer's directions, and use at your own discretion and risk.) Washing and rinsing your hair with cool water helps sustain the color longer. Having used this specific product for over a year, I have seen that my hair remains healthy, strong, and beautiful.
I get anywhere from 5, to as many as 12 compliments when I'm out grocery shopping. Random people come over to me, and tell me how beautiful it is. I've heard other people talking to others about how gorgeous it is. In all my years dying my hair, I have never had so many compliments EVERY TIME I go out! True story!

PALTY HAIR COLOR HONEY BROWN Review

PALTY HAIR COLOR HONEY BROWN
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Asian male, thick hair type.
I usually cut my own hair.
Why? Because hard to communicate the hair you want with stylist and stylists aren't exactly the mind readers.
I've got the cutting part down and, usually, I'm content with my hair cuts... also $20 + tips saved.
Now, as far as dying your hair, I still haven't found a silver bullet.
I've tried this one (Palty Honey Borwn) just now.
Same result with any other types of hair dying brands (drug store ones), it works about 3 to 5 percent.
Meaning, it won't make too much difference from your original hair color.
Hair dying product that actually works are ones with bleach in it.
For example, Men's Palty caramel brown will actually be able make a bit of impact and will change your hair color to sort of redish brown.
Since I've bleached my hair, that is starting from much lighter shade, I hoped for more.
But 1.5 hour wasted (worked about 5 percent).
Well, I could spend about $40 to $100 for hair dying at the salon, but hate the dreadful wait time and, it is, after all, expensive.
Anyway, still experimenting (hope my scalp won't go too bad from some unknown chemicals).
If you are leaving in So cal area, cheapest place I found Palty is at Korea Town Plaza on Western blvd, $7.99.
Will update if I find a good way to get the hair colors you want, I'm shooting for ash brown.
Any comments are welcomed if you know some tips.

Manic Panic Amplified Hot Hot Pink 4oz Review

Manic Panic Amplified Hot Hot Pink 4oz
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I see there are a lot of claims that the color doesn't come out after following the directions. I assume these reviewers only left in the dye for the "15-30 minutes" that the included instructions recommend- DO NOT DO THIS. Leave the stuff in for an hour AT THE VERY LEAST. I imagine it would just wash right out if only left in for 15 minutes! I recommend leaving it in for 2-3 hours if you have the time (overnight, with a showercap on while you sleep is even better!). The great thing about this stuff is that there are no side effects to leaving it in for a longer processing time. Be patient, and the color should last 2 months no problem.
Also to achieve the EXACT color, you're going to either have to have light blond hair, or bleached hair. I have naturally dark brown hair, and I usually just have to bleach it twice. (First bleach job gets me at a orangey color, then I wait a couple days and bleach it again to a deep gold) I throw in Hot Hot Pink and it looks great! It comes out a little more deeper than pink. I've bleached it a third time before to a yellowy blonde and then used toner, and that gets an actual hot pink color really well.
If you expect to have Hot Hot Pink hair instantly in 15 minutes, this isn't going to happen. And it definitely won't work if you have darker hair and aren't willing to bleach. But if you're willing to do the work (it's really not that much lol) the color is amazing!

Manic Panic Flash Lightening 40 Volume Maxium Lift Kit Review

Manic Panic Flash Lightening 40 Volume Maxium Lift Kit
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The best product ever , it dye all types of hair, from black to dark blond to a sweet yellow sunny hair color what is the great base for the final color.
I used this product on a light brown hair, after 25 min the hair was almost white , on a tick black hair it take around 60 to 90 min, the maximum time you can lightening your hair is 2 hours but under control and on a healthy hair , and trust me the hair was so soft and shiny after not compared to other products, however it burns the client skin a little especially on the temples where the skin is mostly warm , I suggest adding some lite real sugar to the mix ( no sweet-low or splender ) do not heat up the mix, it will "burn" the scalp even more and damage your hair, this product is powerful at 40% volume so be very careful.
