Other brands that include ammonia strip so much of my hair's natural pigment wash out to howdy-doody red even if they say they are dark brown (my natural color). This stuff covers my gray and adds some nice highlights, even though a few washes are needed to wash out the initial Morticia Addams black. I don't know why it is so hard to color hair brown. There is a whole wall of this product at a local odd-lots store, except for all of the 4 and 5 level browns. Even the ads with Penelope Cruz couldn't keep this on the market, so enjoy it while you can. I don't know what the reviewer who complained about the smell is talking about. In my opinion, the scent is far from overbearing and has none of the old "beauty parlor" smell of the ammonia-containing dyes.
