(More customer reviews)I'm half Black and half Indian. I used to relax my hair to keep it more manageable and under control but I decided to go natural a couple of years ago to give me the flexibility to wear it straight or curly and to minimize the breakage and general poor condition of my hair after these harsh, permanent chemical treatments.
To give you an idea of what I'm working with, my hair is very thick, extremely curly, and dry, dry, DRY. If I blow dry it, it 'fros out like Diana Ross' mane. I can flat iron it and it looks great... if there's no moisture in the air which would frizz it out again. When it's straightened, it falls about 4 inches past my shoulders. I can wear it curly and when I do, I put it back in a pony tail so it's out of my face (it shrinks up to about 2-3 inches above my shoulders). My hair often takes on a life of its own and if I do not put in some sort of product, it's nearly impossible to get it to stay where I want it to stay, or cooperate in general. Daily, I wear my hair up in a bun or pony tail.
I started using Optimal Oil Therapy 3-N-1 Creme Oil Moisturizer about a year ago. I use it after I've washed and conditioned my hair (I wash my hair no more than once a week - else the breakage is tremendous and it becomes impossible to grow out). I wait until my hair has dried a bit (not sopping wet and still has some water in it) and then work it through, focusing on the ends, because that's where I really need it. I comb out my hair and either let it dry naturally and then put it up in a bun or blow dry it if I'm wearing it straight. If I blow dry it, I'll put a bit more in after it's completely dried. This tames the fly-aways and leaves my hair super shiny after I flat iron it. It's a must if you flat iron your hair because it really locks in the moisture that would otherwise be stripped out by the heat. My hair still steams when I iron it, but the strands aren't dry and breaking. They are shiny and soft - and it looks like I've had a relaxer put in it because the finish is that beautiful. If it's humid out and I've used this stuff, my hair is much more resistant to frizzing out. Also, I used to use a shine serum after straightening my hair to make my locks look healthier and get rid of dullness but I don't need to use such products anymore because Optimal Oil Therapy takes care of that for me. As a side note, it doesn't really do much for my curly hair but it's great for when I want to wear my hair straight.
If I'm not careful and apply too much to the crown of my head, it leaves my hair pretty greasy and weighed down, so beware of that!
This product is definitely what it says - a CREAMY OIL. It's like heavy duty lotion for your hair. If you're looking for something that is not oily, do NOT get this! Look for something else because this isn't the product for you.
If you have natural hair, similar to what I've described, and you want to preserve your ends, straighten it like I do half of the time with heat, add shine and tame those pesky fly-aways, I'd recommend trying this out.
